Ladner Pickleball - First!

16/8/2017

Ladner Pickleball
Here's a report from Peter Darvill of the Delta Pickleball Association about the grand opening of their new courts on August 12th:
"Outdoor Ladner Pickleball has arrived big time!!  "The Greatest Game with the Strangest Name" now has 3 Outdoor Courts in beautiful Delta, B.C.   These are the first dedicated pickleball courts to be built in the Lower Mainland, following suit with such other B.C. towns as Abbotsford,  Kelowna, Salmon Arm, Trail, Penticton, etc.   And 6 courts now open in Nanaimo!   But we have bragging rights for the Lower Mainland!
The opening on August 12th attracted our highest ranking officials including Lois Jackson, our wonderful Mayor, Carla Qualtrough, our wonderful MP who is also Canada's Minister of Sports and Persons with Disabilities, our wonderful Councillors, Robert Campbell and Sylvia Bishop, and many more wonderful elected officials, Parks Board Representatives, etc.  I estimated a crowd of 120 with a low key announcement of the event.  We don't like too much hoopla in Ladner!
We had a demonstration of high level play by 4 top level local players and I even got to hit a few balls with Lois and Carla!  Carla is legally blind, but was able to pick up the ball very well and return it, something she is not able to do with tennis.  Just shows how this game is for all, from 9 to 99 and beyond.  You don't have to be a chiseled athlete to play this game and it doesn't take years to become good at it unlike tennis, golf etc.  The learning curve is rapid. Just get off the couch, off the cell phone, off the laptop and enjoy!
Our volunteer gang have formed a club, Delta Pickleball Association.  We even have a website already... how's that for a group of geezers!!  www.deltapickleball.org
You can find our play times on there, as we move forward in promoting the game.  We will be having beginner lessons, a lock box for folks to access free paddles, balls, etc.  Mini Tournaments too.  As we evolve, we will have equal level play times throughout the week, but right now come out and enjoy.
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in North America.  We applaud Delta Council and Delta Parks and Recreation for their foresight."
